Are your employees using Apple’s QuickTime media player on their Windows PCs? If so, it’s time to spring into action and remove the software as quickly as possible.
Here’s why:
Researchers have discovered two major security vulnerabilities in QuickTime for Windows. If left exposed, hackers could exploit these vulnerabilities and gain easy entry into your network, or unleash crippling malware.
In the past Apple has released new security updates to address similar issues. Unfortunately, however, Apple has no plans for an update this time around.
That’s because back in November, Apple announced its intention to discontinue support for QuickTime on Windows machines. For this reason, Apple will not be addressing the current security concerns.
A warning about the new vulnerabilities was also recently echoed by the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT).
“Computers running QuickTime for Windows will continue to work after support ends,” the statement read. “However, using unsupported software may increase the risks from viruses and other security threats.”
The good news is that Apple users need not worry, as the warning is meant only for Windows computers. But for Windows users, the message is clear: Use this software at your own risk.
This vulnerability also brings to light another major cybersecurity issue, which is a lack of visibility and control in enterprise IT departments. Undoubtedly, many IT managers will be scrambling this week to see who is still using QuickTime. For some managers, it may also be difficult to determine how many employees are using Windows. This is especially true for organizations with large numbers of remote workers.
