10 Healthcare Cybersecurity Stats That Will Make Your Jaw Drop

With so many high-profile data breaches in the news these days, it’s easy to become desensitized to cybercrime, and to dismiss the possibility of an attack on your business. In reality, though, it’s likely that hackers will target your network in search of valuable information sooner or later. If your network is not protected, it could lead to a costly and time-consuming ordeal.

Are you unconvinced about the reality of cybercrime in the healthcare industry? Consider these 10 statistics:

$363: This is the average going rate for individual medical records on the black market, higher than the price of data from any other industry. Medical data contains valuable information and fetches top dollar on the dark Web, which is why the industry is heavily targeted by hackers. Source

$17,000: The total amount paid in ransom by the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center after the organization was hit by an unexpected ransomware attack. Ransomware, in case you’re unfamiliar with the term, is a type of malware that allows hackers to steal data and hold it until a ransom is paid. Source

$3.9 million: This amount was paid by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research to settle a data breach, after a laptop that contained data on 13,000 patients was stolen from an employee’s car. Source

$5.6 billion: The estimated amount that data breaches cost the healthcare industry each year. Source

$20,000: The amount that one patient was asked to pay for a surgery he never had, following a snowboarding accident that required a simple X-Ray. According to NBC, the hospital’s hard drive was stolen, and the patient was sent a phony bill. Source

59 percent: In a recent study of decision makers in the healthcare industry, 59 percent of respondents claimed that security and data privacy presented the biggest challenges for integrating connected devices into their organizations. Source

47 percent: This is the percentage of healthcare organizations that claimed they are not confident in their ability to keep cloud data secure. This comes despite the fact that 91 percent of healthcare organizations are using the cloud. Source

253: The number of reported healthcare breaches in 2015, which resulted in the theft of over 112 million records. Source

98 percent: This is how many healthcare data breaches were caused by large-scale hacks. Source

90 percent: The percentage of healthcare organizations that reported suffering from a data breach during the last two years. About 45 percent reported more than five data breaches during that time period. Source

In light of these statistics, it’s time to take action. Get serious about cybersecurity, and start looking for ways that you can protect your information from the ever-present threat of hackers.
