Noodles & Company Serves Customers a Data Security Incident Notice

“Fast-casual” restaurant chain Noodles & Company made headlines this week when the company revealed it was the victim of a large data breach.

According to the Washington Times, the security incident happened when malware entered into Noodles & Company’s computer network and spread to locations all across the U.S. In total, more than 400 locations were affected by the breach, which occurred between January 31, 2016 and June 2, 2016.

The breach spanned 27 states and Washington, D.C. There were 60 affected restaurants in Colorado, where the company’s national headquarters is located, and 58 locations between Virginia and Maryland.

As of right now, there is no information about how many total customers were impacted by the data breach. Law enforcement and the U.S. Secret Service are conducting an investigation to find out more information.

In a statement, Noodles & Company announced that the malware was identified and contained. The company announced that it is safe to use credit and debit cards that were used at the restaurant.

“In an era where sophisticated and determined criminals have proven capable of successfully attacking a wide range of computer networks, we must all increase our level of vigilance,” the company stated. “We encourage you to review your account statements regularly and monitor your credit reports for suspicious activity. Please read the statement below to find out more about the incident, how it may impact you and the resources available to you to better protect against fraud and identity theft.”

Unfortunately, Noodles & Company will learn the hard way that cleaning up after a data breach is a long, time-consuming affair. While notifying customers was the right thing to do (and also necessary from a legal standpoint), it doesn’t put an end to the problem.

In addition to dealing with an investigation, Noodles & Company will also have to repair trust among its customers. As major companies like Target, the Home Depot, JP Morgan Chase and Sony all experienced following their high-profile data breaches, hacks can take years to clean up. And thanks to the Internet, the news of a data breach never really disappears. It forever lingers on as a permanent black eye to the brand.

So let the Noodles & Company data breach be a lesson to start taking data security seriously. Right now, your company could already be hacked. There could be malware inside your network that is stealing your customers’ financial information and personal details, or your own company’s trade secrets.

One of the best ways to reduce the damage of a data breach is to invest in a managed services provider like Apex Technology Services. Apex will conduct a top-down security overhaul of your network to ensure that it is not already compromised.
