1H17 Was a Cybersecurity Disaster

From a cybersecurity perspective, the first half of 2017 was a giant mess as we witnessed many major security incidents. A few examples on the long list of affected companies included:

According to one study, there was a 164 percent increase in stolen, compromised or lost records during 1H17, and a 103 percent increase in the number of breaches in the education sector alone.

What’s more, a total of 918 breaches resulted in 1.9 billion data records being compromised across the world during 1H17. And it’s safe to assume that this figure is much higher as there are still many companies that were breached, but do not know it yet.

Remember: Hackers will often worm their way into a network and lay dormant, silently ciphering data until they are discovered. Oftentimes, it can be weeks, months or even years before a company finds out they are infected.

It has been confirmed, though, that since 2013 at least 9 billion data records have been exposed. During 1H17 alone, over 10 million records were exposed or compromised every day. And less than one percent of the stolen, compromised or lost data from 1H17 was protected by encryption.

Malicious outsiders were responsible for the largest percentage of data breaches, at 74 percent.

There was also a sharp spike in ransomware during 1H17, and it continues to be a major global pandemic. In just a few short months, we saw the outbreaks of WannaCry, Petya and NotPetya. And this week, a new Locky variant has surfaced that was used to launch 20 million attacks in just one day.

In the last year, SMBs have paid at least $301 million in ransom to hackers.

So as you can see, it’s ugly out there. It’s open season against businesses, and organizations that do not take active measures to protect their assets will get breached either by outside or inside forces. It’s only a matter of time.
